Gypsy Woman was released in 1967 and it was Joe’s debut recording with Fania Records. The album’s musical director was Johnny Pacheco, with Joe on piano and lead vocals, Joe “Chickie” Fuente and Ruben Hernandez on trombone, Eddie Nater on timbales, Victor Gonzalez on congas, Louis Devis on bass and Richie Cortez on percussion. The first single off the album was the title track, a nod to the 1961 the Impressions’ hit of the same name. The album crosses and blends various styles of music, including soul, jazz, funk and Afro-Cuban.

  • Highlight tracks include the soul classic “Gypsy Woman,” and Bataan’s signature tune “Ordinary Guy”
